Living together—de facto relationships

A de facto relationship is when you and your partner live in the same house as husband and wife or same-sex couple but you are not legally married or in a registered relationship.

The Australian government and the Federal Magistrate Court can provide you with legal information about your de facto relationship; visit:

Registered relationship

A registered relationship is a way to recognise you are in a committed relationship by the Australian and Queensland governments.

Once your relationship is registered, you can use your certificate to prove your identity and eligibility for superannuation, tax and government welfare payments.

You can register your relationship with your partner if you are 18 and over, free of charge.
