Maintenance debts

What is a maintenance debt?

A maintenance debt occurs when:

  • anyone in your household or visitors damage the property
  • you move out of a property that needs repairs, rubbish removal or cleaning not caused by normal wear and tear.

We will check for these things during the 12 monthly and final inspections of the property.

What happens if I owe money for repairs, cleaning or maintenance?

We will charge the cost to your account and let you know in writing. You have 4 weeks to pay before we ask the debt management team to recover the debt.

What if I don't agree with these costs?

If you don't agree with the charges, you should contact your nearest Housing Service Centre to discuss the matter and request a review of the debt. If an agreement can’t be reached, you can appeal this decision.

What if I don't pay these costs?

If you owe money to us for rent or maintenance costs, you must repay it.

We use a debt management team to recover outstanding money and the judicial system (court).

If you need housing assistance in the future, and you have a maintenance or rent debt, we will not offer you assistance until you have repaid your debt, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
