Medical aids subsidy scheme
The Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS) provides funding for medical aids and equipment to eligible Queensland residents who have a permanent and stabilised condition or a disability.
The scheme helps people to live at home and avoid premature or inappropriate residential care or hospitalisation.
Aids and equipment are subsidy funded on a permanent loan basis, through private ownership or the purchase of consumables.
Aids and equipment covered
- Communication aids—artificial larynges, communication software, speech-generating devices and voice amplification devices
- Continence aids—disposable pads, nappies, reusable pants, catheters, sheaths, leg drainage bags and night drainage bags
- Daily living aids—bath boards, mobile floor hoists, mobile shower chairs, non-mobile commodes, pressure reduction mattresses and transfer benches
- Home oxygen—concentrator machines and cylinders
- Medical grade footwear—customised, custom-made and prefabricated footwear
- Mobility aids—manual or powerdrive wheelchairs, wheeled walking aids and pressure reduction cushions
- Orthoses—lower limb or spinal orthotic devices.
- Spectacles (through the Spectacle Supply Scheme)—basic prescription, glasses
- Cystic Fibrosis Program—aids and equipment to eligible Queensland residents who have cystic fibrosis and who are treated in a Queensland hospital
Eligibility
You may be eligible for MASS assistance if all of the following applies:
- you are a permanent resident of Queensland
- you have a permanent and stabilised condition or disability
- you hold 1 of the following:
- Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
- Veterans' Affairs (DVA) Pensioner Concession Card (conditions apply)
- Centrelink Health Care Card
- Queensland Government Seniors Card
- Centrelink Confirmation of Concession Card Entitlement Form (conditions apply).
Applying for MASS
Eligible people will need to arrange a clinical assessment by a healthcare professional (prescriber) approved under the scheme.
The prescriber—such as a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, or registered nurse—can vary depending on the aid required.
You will need to complete an application form and submit it for consideration.
Prescriber responsibilities and eligibility criteria are available in the MASS Statewide Procedures.
A waiting period may apply to before receiving aid, and you may need to contribute to its cost.
