Medical equipment hire

Medical equipment and aids are available for hire if you are recovering from illness or injury, have a disability, or are a senior.

Types of medical equipment for hire

You can hire:

  • mobility equipment
  • bathroom equipment
  • beds and seating
  • assistive technology.

Hiring medical equipment

If you have been admitted to a public hospital and require medical equipment, you may be eligible to hire or loan equipment before you leave. This will vary from hospital to hospital, and will depend on availability.

Most local chemists hire out equipment such as crutches and wheelchairs—the cost will depend on the chemist you visit.

Financial help

If you have a long-term or stabilised condition or disability, you can get subsidy funding for medical aids and equipment through the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS). This scheme does not provide financial help for hire of medical equipment or for short term loan equipment.
