School children and adolescents
Additional vaccinations are recommended in adolescence because the vaccines:
- require a booster dose in adolescence (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis or whooping cough)
- are recommended to be given to adolescents only (human papillomavirus or HPV)
- were not routinely given to infants previously (varicella or chickenpox and hepatitis B).
Adolescents can receive free vaccines under the National Immunisation Program Schedule Queensland (PDF, 135KB) to protect against:
- hepatitis B
- diphtheria
- tetanus
- whooping cough (pertussis)
- chickenpox (varicella)
- human papillomavirus (HPV).
The School Based Vaccination Program allows parents to have their child vaccinated through their school at no cost. Vaccines may also be administered by your doctor who may charge a fee.
