Immunisation
Immunisation (also known as vaccination) protects children and adults against certain diseases.
Immunisation uses the body's natural defence mechanism—the immune response—to build resistance to infectious diseases.
Although many diseases are not as common as they were in the past, it is still very important for children and adults to be immunised to help ensure we do not experience serious disease outbreaks.
Immunisations are recommended at certain ages, life stages and for special groups of people.
- Babies and young children (under 7 years)
- School children and adolescents
- Adults
- People with additional immunisation requirements including health professionals, care workers, people who work with animals and people travelling overseas.
National Immunisation Program Schedule Queensland
The National Immunisation Program Schedule Queensland (PDF, 135KB) lists the vaccines which are funded under the National Immunisation Program for eligible people. It includes additional vaccines which are recommended and funded for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Cost of vaccines
Vaccines included in the National Immunisation Program Schedule Queensland (PDF, 135KB) are free to eligible people.
An approved nurse or doctor will give you the injection, but there may be a consultation fee. There may be other vaccines recommended for you that you will need to buy. Talk to your doctor for advice on which immunisations you need.
Some local governments provide free immunisation clinics. Contact your local council to find out more about these clinics.
Keeping your vaccines safe
For some immunisations, you will need to get a prescription from your doctor and buy the vaccine from a pharmacy. Vaccines need to be kept cold (2-8°C) at all times, so you should collect it from the pharmacy just before you visit your doctor. On arrival at your doctor, give the vaccine to the practice receptionist for safe storage until you go in for your appointment.
Payments and rebates for immunised children
The Department of Human Services only provides certain payments and rebates to parents who immunise their children.
