132 500 - The number to call if you need the SES

SES

The State Emergency Service (SES) received 23 requests for assistance in 14 hours on 17 January as a result of severe weather across South East Queensland.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the calls were mainly from residents in the North Coast and North Brisbane reporting leaky or damaged roofs.

"The State Emergency Service hotline - 132 500 - is the best number to call if you need help from the SES."

"Trained call takers will take all the relevant details and will task the nearest SES group or unit to respond," said Mr Roberts.

Emergency Management Queensland, and local and district disaster management groups will maintain a watching brief on Queensland's weather situation.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised of the potential of damaging winds and heavy rain leading to flash flooding as a low pressure system moves south along the Queensland coast on 17 and 18 of January.

Mr Roberts said the clear advice is that January's weather system is very different to what was experienced last summer so members of the public should ensure they are aware of the forecast but not alarmed.

"A lot of work has been undertaken over the past 12 months to further strengthen our disaster management system to ensure Queensland is as ready as it can be for natural disasters."

If you require assistance, you should call 132 500 to request help from your local SES group. If the matter is life-threatening, call Triple Zero (000).

Mr Roberts also reminded residents to stay away from flooded creeks and streams and roads that have water over them.

"Remember—if it's flooded, forget it."
