Triple Zero is the emergency phone number in Australia for police, fire fighters or ambulance. Call Triple Zero only in an emergency.
Calls to Triple Zero are free (mobile phones, land lines and pay phones).
When to call Triple Zero (000)
You should call Triple Zero (000) if:
- someone is seriously injured or in need of urgent medical help
- your life or property is being threatened
- you have just witnessed a serious accident or crime.

106 Text Emergency Relay Service
If you have a hearing or speech impairment, you can contact police, fire or ambulance on 106 directly through a TTY (also known as a teletypewriter or textphone). 106 is a toll-free number.
You cannot contact emergency services by text message (SMS) from your mobile phone.
Calling 106
When you call 106:
- Type PPP for police, FFF for the fire brigade or AAA for an ambulance.
- The relay officer will contact the correct service and stay on the line to relay your conversation.
- Because TTY is connected to a land line phone number. emergency services can see the address you are calling from. (You will still need to confirm your address).
The 106 service is only for TTY phones and can't be:
- called from an ordinary phone
- text messaged from a mobile phone
- contacted through the internet.

Calling Triple Zero from a mobile phone
Calls to Triple Zero should work from almost any mobile phone. If you can't get through, try calling 112 as an alternate number. Your call will be transferred to Triple Zero automatically (in areas with GSM network coverage). If there is no mobile coverage, you won't be able to make the call.
