Be prepared for disasters

The key to minimising the impact of natural disasters on yourself, your family and your community is being well prepared.

You should know where to get information and what to do before a disaster strikes. Once the disaster is happening, it may be too late.

Plan ahead and be prepared so that during an emergency you know:

  • how to get accurate information quickly
  • what to do before and during the disaster
  • where to go if you need to evacuate
  • how to keep in touch with family members
  • how to contact emergency services.

Your emergency plan

Every household, business and workplace should have a plan for dealing with emergencies and disasters.

Prepare your home

Tune in to warnings

Your evacuation plan and kit

Do you have a plan in case you need to evacuate from your home or workplace? Where will you go, how will you get there? You may need several evacuation options, depending on the type of emergency.

If you need to evacuate in a hurry, you won't have much time to decide what to take with you. Make sure you have essential items packed and ready to go.

Red Cross

Red Cross Emergency REDiplan

The Emergency REDiplan was developed by the Australian Red Cross and Emergency Management Queensland to help people with a disability; their carers and families prepare, respond and recover from disasters.

If you or someone you know has a disability, you can use the REDiplan’s step by step approach to assist in:

  • establishing or strengthening your support network
  • being informed of hazards, local support and emergency contacts
  • identifying your specific needs in an emergency and developing your personal emergency plan
  • deciding on appropriate items for your personal emergency kit and evacuation kit.
