Scholarships and funding
School students can apply for scholarships and funding in areas like science, leadership or the arts. There are also allowances to help families offset the cost of school.
Scholarships
- Creative Generation Excellence Awards in the Arts—recognises secondary students in the visual and performing arts.
- Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in Science and Science Education—recognises students that have made outstanding and innovative contributions to science.
- Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarships—provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who want to become teachers.
- TJ Ryan Memorial Medals and Scholarships—provides students who show leadership while in Year 12 with funding for tertiary education. State and non-state secondary schools must nominate a student to be eligible for this award.
- Aspiring Teacher Grants—provides a grant for high-achieving Year 12 students who are starting a teacher education program.

Textbook and resource allowance
The scheme offers parents financial help to offset the cost of student textbooks and education resources. There are eligibility requirements. To find out if you qualify, visit:
Schoolkids bonus
The Australian Government now provides a schoolkids bonus in the form of cash payments to help families with the costs of education.
This replaces the education tax refund; you have up to two years from the end of the financial year to make a claim.
ABSTUDY
ABSTUDY is an allowance that might help Indigenous high school students stay at school or in further study.
