Queensland Life Sciences Industry Report 2012
21 March 2013: The Queensland Life Sciences Industry Report 2012 provides an overview of growth from 2009 to 2011 in the biotechnology, medical devices and pharmaceuticals sectors.
The report was primarily derived from a survey of 139 organisations in the life sciences sector, ranging from publicly listed companies to start-up companies, and major research institutions and small research centres.
Key findings
Key findings included:
- The industry generated $4.36b in 2011, a decrease on previous years.
- Overall, the industry’s ability to raise capital was limited by the global financial crisis.
- Listed life sciences companies based in Queensland posted good financial results.
- Patent applications by Queensland companies surveyed more than doubled between 2009 and 2011.
- Of Queensland interests surveyed, there are at least 32 clinical stage products under development in the state.
Despite the challenges, the report found positive business sentiment in terms of employment and income growth within the industry. This sentiment suggests the life sciences industry in Queensland is increasing in maturity and is more resilient to economic downturns than it had been a decade or so ago.
