Using public transport with an assistance dog

A person with disability that requires a guide, hearing or assistance dog can travel on all public transport in Queensland.

Guide, hearing or assistance dogs must pass a public access test to become certified to legally accompany a person with disability on all public transport.

Guide dog badge

Once certified, dogs must display this badge (right) on their coat or harness that clearly identifies them as a guide, hearing or assistance dog.

Handler Identity Card

People who rely on a guide, hearing or assistance dog must carry a Handler Identity Card, which confirms that their dog is certified.

Applying for a card

  1. Complete an application form:
  2. attach:
    • certificate of disability from a registered practitioner
    • certified copy of one of the following:
      • birth certificate
      • current driver's licence
      • current 18 plus card
      • current Medicare card
      • current passport
    • certified photograph of the handler
    • photograph of the guide, hearing or assistance dog.
