Finding out your child has a disability

  • My child has a disability: what now?

This guide provides advice on where to start and what to do in those early days after receiving the news that your child has a disability.

  • Gathering information

Tips and advice to help you gather relevant and reliable information about the disability and what to discuss with your GP or health professional.

  • Accessing services

The Queensland and Australian governments share funding and administration of services for children with a disability and their families. Services can be provided by government departments or agencies, or community organisations.

  • Support for parents

Be sure to link in with disability support groups. They can be a great place to gather information and tips from other families, as well as to make friends with others in similar situations.

  • Ongoing support and planning

Formalised planning helps services make the most of their resources for your child or family’s benefit. Planning isn’t static—it’s ongoing. And it can change with your child or family’s needs.
