Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarship
Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarships assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students while they study to become teachers through a college or university.
The scholarship provides up to $20,000 over 4 years. Scholarship students who meet our requirements following graduation will be offered a permanent position at a Queensland state school.
If you are offered one of these positions, you must work at the school for a minimum amount of time—the same amount of time that you received scholarship funding.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, you must:
- provide written evidence that you are a recognised member of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community, or that you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
- have gotten good marks in high school or at TAFE or university
- have either
- chosen an approved pre-service teacher education program at a Queensland higher education institution (for full-time study) as your first preference with QTAC (to start in Semester 1) or
- have started an approved pre-service teacher education program (undergraduate or postgraduate) and be continuing full-time study.
Participants in the Remote Area Teaching Education Program (RATEP) are eligible to apply.
Scholarship support
Support provided through the scholarship includes:
- up to $20,000 pre-tax (up to $2,500 per successfully completed semester—up to 4 years) to help with study and other expenses
- an offer of permanent employment as a teacher in a Queensland state school, starting the semester after you graduate (if you meeting scholarship and employment conditions)
- access to
- a range of online resources, including the Learning Place
- professional development and induction programs
- professional networks and support from mentors, principals and colleagues within Queensland state schools.
Scholarship conditions
You will need to sign an agreement once you accept the scholarship. You must agree to:
- study full-time and successfully complete all academic and professional experience requirements of your study program within 5 years
- gain teacher registration with the Queensland College of Teachers and successfully complete the Application for Teacher Employment process at the end of your studies
- commit to permanent full-time employment as a teacher for a minimum period (up to 4 years)
- accept placement in a Queensland state school chosen by the department.
