Queensland Week Sponsorship Program

The Queensland Week Sponsorship Program encourages Queenslanders to celebrate Queensland Week in a way that reflects the unique culture, heritage and aspirations of their own community.

Applications for the 2012 Queensland Week sponsorship program closed on 2 September 2011.

Organisations were invited to apply for sponsorship of up to $10,000 (exclusive of GST) for events held to celebrate Queensland Week in 2012, to be held from 2 to 11 June.

Events sponsored under the 2012 Queensland Week sponsorship program include:

Queensland Week Whitsunday Community Champion Fun Days

  • Whitsunday Regional Council
  • Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 and Saturday 9 to Sunday 10 June 2012

There will be 4 free events around the Whitsunday in Collinsville, Bowen, Cannonvale and Proserpine. They will celebrate the achievements of individuals and groups in the local community. Each event will include music, entertainment and performances by local Indigenous and cross-cultural groups. The Whitsunday Regional Council will call for nominations for champions in a range of categories in the lead up to Queensland Week,

Queensland Week Mission Arts Festival

A week of events, art workshops and cultural activities celebrating the Mission Beach area. Highlights will include an exhibition opening, concert and community celebration.

Queensland Week Townsville Literary Festival

  • Townsville Library Service
  • Monday 4 to Monday 11 June 2012

The festival will celebrate Queensland writers, literature and drama, and will include workshops, author talks and lectures with recognised Queensland writers and a day with visiting authors at local schools, libraries and galleries.

Far North Queensland Heritage Day

 This event will be based around displays at the Mareeba Heritage Centre with free activities and events including an opening ceremony, re-enactments, local town crier, tours, games, competitions, heritage pioneer picnic and entertainment.

The Queensland Day Community BBQ

  • Mackay Regional Council
  • Wednesday 6 June 2012 (Queensland Day)

Mackay will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2012. The community BBQ will celebrate the region's history and showcase its economic, social and sporting contribution to Queensland. Activities will include a citizenship ceremony, BBQ, roving entertainment, history displays, and screening of a  DVD that shows in pictures how Mackay, and Queensland, have changed over the past 150 years.

Queensland Week Celebrations at Woodgate Beach

  • Tuesday 5 to Monday 11 June 2012

The program will include a BBQ, continuous tennis, gourmet cooking demonstrations, art exhibition and jazz concert. The Woodgate Family Fun Day will be held on the final day with markets, races on the beach and a Queensland themed sandcastle building competition.

Nine Decades of Tea and Scones—A Social History of Queensland for Queensland Week (Toowoomba)

The exhibition will focus on each of the 9 decades that QCWA has existed and will highlight the QCWA's contribution to events that took place in Queensland during each decade.

Queensland Week Family Fun Day

The program will include free entertainment, children's rides and activities, fitness demonstrations, market stalls and sporting competitions.

Queensland Week Riding on the Sheep's Back—Then and Now Celebration

  • Muttaburra Community Development Association
  • Friday 8 to Sunday 10 June 2012

This event will celebrate Muttaburra's shearing industry. The program will include entertainment, demonstrations, stalls, photography, historical displays and a range of other activities.

Queensland Week Party at Charlie's Trousers—140 years celebration

  • Saturday 2 June 2012

This community street party will involve local entertainment, awards ceremony, art exhibition, food and market stalls, free kids entertainment, photo competition and The Charters Towers Challenge.

Our Queensland, Our Bloomin' Beautiful Blackbutt Queensland Week Celebration

This celebration will start with a poet's breakfast, followed by the raising of the Queensland Flag and reading of the Proclamation. Other activities will include an essay competition on 'What Queensland means to me', children's activities, restored cars display, community achievement awards, best decorated hat competition and old time games.

Queensland Week Rainbow Beach Festival of Living

  • Rainbow Beach Sports, Recreation and Memorial Club Inc
  • Sunday 3 June 2012

This festival will  include all day entertainment by local musicians, an awards presentation, dreamtime stories, local produce stalls and children's activities. All attendees will be encouraged to wear Queensland colours.

Queensland Week Celebration by the Sea

  • Hervey Bay Council for the Arts
  • Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 June 2012

This event will, celebrate the contribution of local community groups, musicians and artists to the Fraser Coast and greater Queensland. The program will include a busking competition, water sports, soap box, community art and song writing competitions, performances, sand art and showcases of musicians and artists.

Winton's Queensland Week Celebration

  • Winton Shire Council
  • Sunday 10 June 2012

The event will include motorbike competitions, demonstrations, rockclimbing, a jumping castle, face painting, Queensland themed BBQ, and entertainment by a local band and DJ. There will also be barrel and bending races, and an open wheelie competition.

Queensland Week Community Day

  • Cairns Regional Gallery
  • Saturday 2 June 2012

The free day will include talks by local artists and curators, workshops and an exhibition. It will focus on endangered Queensland icons (cassowary, dugong and sea turtle) and people who attend will receive a free seed stick of Queensland natives. There will also be a Queensland icon competition and local entertainment.

The Best of Queensland Seniors Day

  • Returned and Services League of Australia, Currumbin Palm Beach Sub Branch
  • Thursday 7 June 2012
The concert will showcase Queensland performers, guest speakers, and memorabilia promoting the region’s tourism, sport, arts and politics.
